Skin Cancer

Have you served abroad and suffered exposure to the sun?

Thousands of servicemen and woman over the years have served abroad in sunny countries, such as Aden, Cyprus, Oman, Singapore, Malaya, and Hong Kong, to name but a few. Whilst serving in these countries and being exposed to the sun, they were given little to no advice on protecting themselves from the sun’s harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays.

Sometimes many (many) years later, these servicemen and women are developing basal cell or squamous cell carcinomas and are having to receive treatment for skin cancer. We know that occupational sun exposure is a well-studied risk factor for skin cancer development, either melanoma or non-melanoma, and some studies indicate that the military may have a higher rate of skin cancer than the general population.

We know that ‘back in the day’ very little advice, if any, was given to service personnel to protect themselves from these harmful UV rays and we believe that they are perfectly entitled to submit a claim either under the AFCS or WPS system for compensation.

Skin Cancer is now affecting increasing numbers of service personnel

Skin cancer is one of the most common types of cancer in the UK and worldwide, and the main cause is the sun’s harmful ultraviolet rays. There are different types of skin cancer but the most common are the non-melanoma cancers basal cell carcinoma (BCC) and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), which usually develop in the outermost layers of the epidermis. Melanomas, a cancer that begins in melanocytes (the cells that produce the pigment melanin), are rarer but are still the 5th most common cancer in the UK.

If you have been diagnosed with skin cancer or certain skin precancers that have developed due to sun exposure during military service, you may be eligible to claim compensation.

How we can help you

We will assist you in completing an AFCS or WPS application within our online secure server; you’ll be able to use your PC or a mobile device.  Once completed we will carry out a review of your claim form and advise you if anything needs to be added, amended or removed to present a strong case.

If you would like a free, no obligation discussion with one of our specialists you can arrange a call back in seconds. Arrange a call back now.

Taking the right approach is crucial.  Don’t go it alone, and don’t take advice from people that don’t know how the scheme really works, because the likelihood is that you’ll be very disappointed when your claim fails on a technicality.
